이 표현의 유래는 화폐와 관련있는데, 동전이나 지폐에는 그것이 얼마인지 적혀있어서(이것을 face value라 한다), 그 가치를 의심할 여지 없이 확실하게 알 수 있기때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 take X at face value는 “X를 액면 그대로 받아들인다”는 의미이다.
