요 며칠 전에 다룬 play devil’s advocate 이나 예전에 다룬 take something with a grain of salt 기억하십니까? 이 표현들은 비판적 사고를 할 때 자주 등장합니다.

그렇다면, 반대로 “어떤 것을 대할 때 생각을 멈추고 그것을 맹신/신봉할 때"는 어떤 표현을 쓸까요?

absolute trust, complete obedience 등을 써도 되지만, 역사적인 사건때문에 유명해지고 재미있는 표현이 있습니다.

이 표현은 사실 1978년 남아메리카에 있는 가이아나(Guyana)에 있는 존스타운에서 일어난 끔찍한 사건 때문에 유명해진 표현입니다.

그 당시 존스타운에는 Peoples Temple이라는 사이버종교를 이끄는 Jim Jones라는 사이비교주가 있었는데, 어느날 자신의 팔로워들로 하여금 포도맛 쿨에이드를 마시게 하는 의식을 치룹니다.

근데 사실 거기에 독이 들어있었던 것이지요. 그래서 하루만에 900명이상이 한꺼번에 죽어버리는–그리고 그들이 직접마셨기때문에 집단자살이 된(물론 반강제였지만)– 끔찍한 사건이 일어났습니다.

이 이벤트를 기반으로, “개인이나 단체가 어떤 것을 맹목적으로 따를 때"를 묘사하는 표현으로 자주 쓰이기 시작했답니다.

“맹신"이라는 단어가 네거티브한 느낌이 있듯이, Drinking the Kool-aid라는 표현도 네거티브한 뉘앙스가 있습니다.

하지만 반대로 이런 느낌을 일부러 사용해서 표현을 좀 더 생생하게 만들 수 있습니다.
