[Motivation]
인생을 살다보면 가끔씩 정말로 무리한 요구를 부탁받을 때가 있다. 최선을 다하려고 해도 달성하기 힘든 요구말이다.
  • 상사가 40장짜리 리포트를 하루만에 작성해오라고 할 때
  • “날 진정으로 사랑하면…”이라고 말하며 연인이 무리한 부탁을 할 때
  • 친구가 보증을 써달라고 부탁할 때
  • 이미 되살리기 힘들게 되어버린 무언가를 (그림, 에세이, 디자인, 프로그램, 조직, 문화 등) 을 고쳐달라고 하는 부탁을 받을 때
“흠…조금 힘들 것같은데요” 를 이런 상황에서 어떻게 말할까?

1. tall order라 하여 “키가 큰 주문”이라고 생각하면 오산이다
tall 은 “having a relatively great height” 뜻 이외에 “large in amount or degree”의 뜻도 있는데, tall order에서는 후자의 의미로 쓰여진 것이다.
2. a tall order 에서 “a” 를 까먹지 말자. 사전에서는 tall order만 나오지만 밑에 예문에서 볼 수 있듯이, 항상 a 와 같이 쓰인다.
3. 복수로 쓰일 경우에는 tall orders다.

wash over someone

[Motivation]
우리는 “느끼는” 동물이고, 그렇기에 살면서 느낌에 대해 자주 표현한다.
그래서 글을 쓸 때도 소위 “느낀점”을 자주 다루게되는데 그래서 다음과 같이 말할 때가 많다.

근데 이 문장들의 문제가 뭘까?  “나”,”나”,”나”,”나”,”나”‘… 모든 문장 다 “나”로 시작되고있고, 이런 egotistical한 writing은 독자들을 질리게만든다.
관점을 바꾸어, 느낌 자체를 문장의 주연으로 만들어보면 어떨까?

[Comment] 
이 표현은 “재주넘기(somersault)” (밑그림참조) 할 떄  뒹구르는 모습을 본 따, 사랑때문에 “구르는” 모습을 묘사하는 하는 것인데,사실 직역하면 말도 안되는 phrase다. 왜냐하면 머리는 항상 뒤꿈치 위에 있기 때문이다.
그리고 somersault를 할 때도 뒷꿈치가 머리위에 있기때문에, 엄밀히 표현하자면 “heels over head” 이 맞는 표현이다.10

하지만  언어는 변하기 마련이고,  Economist Language section에 있는 한 아티클에 따르면 18세기나 19세기부터 이 표현은 거꾸로, 즉 “head over heels”로 쓰기 시작했단다.
